Why won’t McCain give a "straight talk" answer on birth control?

We all know he was pro-choice before Palin’s nomination. But where does he now stand on birth control?

http://www.americablog.com/2008/07/what-is-john-mccains-problem-with-birth.html

I work part time at a national chain restaurant. If I was a guy, I could get Viagra so I could have sex with my wife. But as a woman, I cannot get birth control.

I had Eclampsia when I delivered my daughter and it continued for several weeks, required 2 emergency room trips and a 9 day hospital stay. I had a seizure.

Due to my age and the high-blood pressure risks associated with Eclampsia I cannot use a birth control method that contains hormones: the pill, the patch, the implant, the shot. I am also allergic to many condoms and lubricants. That leaves me with the sponge or an IUD or withdrawal/rhythm, which is how I got pregnant in the first place.

I would like a copper IUD but Planned Parenthood (by far the cheapest) wants $500 up front- no payments. I don’t have this.

So tell me, what will President McCain do to ensure I get coverage for this very necessary item?

I am 40, in a stable relationship, want no more children, and also cannot afford (no coverage) sterilization.

Tell me how you think this guy can or will help me if he is President.
For those who aren’t getting the point…even the sh itty coverage from the restaurant will cover the "Boner Pill." But it won’t cover an IUD
EDIT: Ha! I can’t write Bo ner in one word!
EDIT: PP has a sliding scale. But not to cover an IUD as this is an ‘invasive’ procedure in the implantation and they need a Dr. to do it, not a nurse or counselor. Yes, my partner works but when the oil bill is $500 and the car insurance bill is $500 and the electricity is $75 and the rent is $1600 and the credit card…all on the same day…not to mention food and baby expenses, it’s damn hard to save $500.
EDIT TO ALL YOU BO NER PEOPLE:

Would you accept covered Viagra? Why isn’ t it these guys responsiblity to get a ha rd on? Why is my uterus "my problem" but their woody is "big business???"
EDIT in AM: Vasectomy is not covered. And my partner has not been with his job long enough for coverage- not sure how good coverage would be there but probably not good. Also no coverage for me through him as we are not married. NOW I’m gonna be told by Palin to abstain.
Chetco, why do all these people say they belong to this group or that and then their kids turn up pregnant, like Ms. Palin’s?

it is a double standard. And people like Palin would chastise you for not accepting any possible pregnancy as a gift from God. She would want you to abstain. So McCain has no answer and Palin’s is right from the old testament.

Now the birth control you want, even getting your tubes tied, should be covered. I don’t have a problem with Viagra being covered, just birth control should be as well.

For you now I would say your partner should get a vasectomy, if you can save the money at all.

  1. It is not John McCain’s nor the governments responsibility to control your fertility. .
If you know you have all those problems why do you continue to have sex knowing you risk getting pregnant.. I would call that irresponsible on your part.

Get your boyfriend /husband to have a vasectomy.

  2. republicans think birth control pills and a rubber are no different than abortion. Bush tried to do it….i’m sure that psycho Palin will to.

wont be long and using a rubber will get you jail time…if you elect these …people….if you can call them people

The will do anything they can to force you to have and keep kids, or stop having sex.

No joke here, do the work

  3. Palin would tell you to abstain… great huh! Or risk youir life and not use contraception as every sperm is sacred.
Trig is an example of how she doesnt use birth control…and because of her age, gave birth to a downs baby. He looks gorgeous dont get me wrong, but what if Trig were born to a poor family? How would they cope?

  4. I really don’t think it’s the governments job to provide birth control. Do you live anywhere near a free clinic or one that you pay on a sliding scale according to your income? I thought that is how PP operates. $500 seems rather high, Why can’t your partner help out?

  5. umm… that’s your responcibility, not McCain’s, not Obama’s, not the President’s job.

also I want to know why Obama won’t give a straight answer for when a fetus gets human rights: "that question is above my paygrade" He said that in the Saddleback interview

Edit: Why don’t you get your husband clipped, it’s much less expensive and less invasive and saves you the trouble of no more children.

  6. In spite of all the media hype, John McCain does very little talking about anything but his POW experience in detail.

John McCain has been exploiting his prisoner of war experience every chance he gets. He has used this story to justify everything from not knowing how many homes he has to his healthcare plan to his marital infidelities to his taste in music. The McCain campaign is even using his POW story in paid ads. But now a veteran who was a prisoner with McCain in Vietnam is explaining loud and clear that being a POW does not qualify McCain to lead our country.

The mainstream press has already begun to call out McCain for overusing his POW story. And it’s cut across all political persuasions.

    * "Whether he’s deflecting criticism over his health-care plan or mocking a tribute to the Woodstock music festival, Senator John McCain has a trump card: the Hanoi Hilton. – Edwin Chen, Bloomberg

    * "Noun, Verb, POW" – Andrew Sullivan, The Atlantic Monthly

    * "The McCain campaign’s constant invocation of the candidate’s POW past is weird bordering on irrational…" – Ana Marie Cox, TIME

    * "I think they are going to it way too many times." – Howard Fineman, Newsweek

It truly saddens me too. Because there are a lot of other fine men and women who have served our nation well and who do not use it constantly as a back-drop for everything that they want to do professionally.

At the RNC McCain tried to talk up the crowd and get everyone excited but he said nothing! If I were excited or firmly believed that I had the solutions to all of our problems…..I certainly would want to give specifics and clearly state my case.

However for some bizarre reason, McCain is keeping us all in the dark about a lot of things and it disgusts me that the American voters are not demanding more information. We have really become a couch-potato nation mentally.

I wish I had better answers for you. And Palin and her harsh, I-like-to-be-in-control-of-other-people’s-lives ideas and followers should be nowhere near the White House. Just when I thought the nomination of McCain would start saving the country from the religious right.

He won’t give a straight talk on it because he’s afraid of offending Sarah!! And it isn’t right that insurance and even Medicaid and Medicare will cover the cost of Viagra but not an I.U.D.

You sparked an interest, so I went to the Library of Congress to look at that bill. Funding for contraceptives was merely the issue to get it on the floor. It is chock FULL of special interest and pork barrel projects. You can read it here>

When someone brags that they voted yes or no on a bill..look it up. This one was sponsored by Hillary, so she could claim in upcoming campaign that she voted yes, and opponent voted no..Its full of her pet projects.
Now, if someone will present a bill that is true and honest , without special projects, you would see far different voting.

I’ll answer from a non-political point of view first. I think it is an outrage that insurance covers Viagra but won’t cover contraceptive devices. However, I’m still not a fan of universal health care. I worked in the medical field for 11 years and saw how difficult it is to get precertifications or authorizations for many procedures/medications/specialists just from having an HMO (Not the open HMO which lets you go to any doctor without obtaining a referral first). If people aren’t willing to educate themselves about the policy they have, they could end up with high medical bills that could have been covered by their insurance had they only followed the rules. Now throw the government in on the fun? I, personally, want nothing that is regulated by the government when it comes to my health- be it a Republican gov’t or a Democratic one.

I have polycystic ovary syndrome and WANT to get pregnant, but, the medication I need to take is $375 a month and isn’t covered by my insurance: Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO. It’s because I choose to go to a doctor who doesn’t believe in synthetic medications. Everything I take is a natural supplement/vitamin. I’ve only been able to afford to buy 2 months worth of medication. I don’t think a universal healthcare plan will pay for it, either.

There are some things that government shouldn’t be in charge of. Healthcare is one, in my opinion.

I’m sorry you can’t get an IUD, it really does suck to be in situations like that. I think the people who are telling you to not have sex are being unrealistic.

The vasectomy idea doesn’t sound unrealistic. Does your insurance company or PP cover this? I know surgery centers will make payment plans. The one I worked at would "finance" a surgery for up to 10 years. Bills make me ill, so, I completely understand the $$ aspect of mortgage, electricity, etc. Adding another bill to our budget right now is definitely something I don’t want to do, but, a vasectomy is certainly cheaper in the long run than the cost of 18 years of raising another child.

Having worked in the medical field for many years, I have to point out that the president or vice president (Or anyone in congress) has any control over what your insurance covers or doesn’t cover. It’s up to the insurance company. I can’t explain why they cover one and not the other, but I can tell you that much of what insurance covers makes no sense.

And, for those who think socialized medicine would be better- let me give you a tidbit from Medicare and what it covers/does not cover in my state:

1.) If you have difficulty swallowing, Medicare will pay for a barium swallow to evaluate it. But, if that difficulty swallowing is related to a stroke, they will not.
2.) If you have an MRI because of a headache, and it’s normal, Medicare won’t pay for it.
3.) There is 1 test that will definitively diagnose alzheimer’s disease while the patient is still alive. If you have the test and alzheimer’s is confirmed, Medicare will pay- if it’s not, Medicare won’t pay. Talk about a catch 22
4.) Similar situation to the one above with carpal tunnel syndrome- there is a difference in that the clinical signs of CTS are a little more definitive than alzheimer’s.

So, while there is an issue between what your insurance company should/should not cover- I don’t think blaming a president is the place to take it. I was using depo injections when Clinton was president- I don’t remember him helping me get that covered.

EDIT: In response to your question to Chetco—My parents were not with me 24/7 (nor should the be). I’d bet there isn’t a single person who has answered this question who can say that they NEVER did something against their parents’ will. Let’s also not forget that just because your parents believe something, doesn’t me that YOU do. My mother believes that organ transplants are not an option, and wishes all of her organs to be buried with her. Does that mean that I, too, must believe the same thing? Come on, now. Let’s at least fight fair!

Sorry you are going through this. It has been one of the biggest examples of hypocrisy in years! My husband has excellent insurance (through the union) BUT up until 6 or 7 years ago they would NOT cover birth control but they would cover viagra!?!?! Our PPO was a catholic hospital so to have any kind of surgery done to act as birth control, they refused. The insurance company said they would not get in the middle of it. The union members had other ideas though and pushed to make BC available same as any other prescription and even forced the insurance to change PPOs. It is MAJOR hypocrisy!! The old hospital would only do my hysterectomy when I had finally developed precancerous tumors.. not before.. since I was only 40 years old, had 2 almost grown children, and had been married for 20+ years as they considered it BC and I should just abstain hahaha right up until I almost died.
